New Servers

Get the Right Server for your business

Looking for your first server is a lot like looking for a new staff member.  They are going to be with you for some years to come, and form an integral part of your business’s infrastructure.  You know that hiring the cheapest labour isn’t always best value, so why would you do the same with such a vital piece of business equipment?

A good server needs to fit a number of criteria, and here are some important differences between and real Server and a Desktop PC that runs server software.

  1. Designed for 24/7 operation.
  2. Designed to run under heavy load for extended periods
  3. Designed for multiple users to read/write simultaneously to the disks
  4. Designed for redundancy - if a component fails, the server will keep running.
  5. Don’t have unnecessary hardware (sound cards, wifi, bluetooth, etc) which use valuable resources.

In each of the above, using a desktop PC to host your business’s critical information will leave you open to unnecessary risks.  If a hard disk fails on a desktop, it shuts down, while on a server it keeps going, and can even repair itself.  If a power supply blows, the PC stops, where a server with redundant power supplies will keep going.  Same for network cards and memory.

If this all sounds expensive, it doesn’t have to be.  We have server packages from IBM and HP starting from only $1,427ex GST.  While these entry-level servers don’t have all the features of the enterprise-class models, they provide a much higher degree of integrity for your data than any desktop would.
